How To Tips for Users

Support Statement to Students:

August, 2010

Windows 7 Ultimate operating system is now available for student use, on the WSC campus.  If you would like to upgrade your laptop:  Ensure that you have a WSC supported Dell D630 model laptop (purchased through the WSC Program) or later.  Next, bring your laptop to the help desk/Laptop Repair Depot during business hours and we will upgrade your operating system to Vista at no charge (be sure and have a backup of ALL your data/music files etc.).  D600, D610 and D620 models are not eligible for this upgrade.  If you are interested in upgrading to Windows 7 and have a supported D630 or later, we will be able to upgrade your computer as of February 1, 2010.

We cannot upgrade non-supported laptops (laptops not purchased through the WSC laptop initiative).  If you wish to upgrade your laptop, the Win7 Ultimate (32 or 64 bit) operating system CD/DVD($20) is available at the IT Help Desk ($ must be in Common Funds on your WSC OneCard ID) this product is available if you wish to self-install.

If a problem arises with your supported (D600, D610, D620) Dell laptop computer which requires us to reimage, we will do so using the existing XP Professional supported image.   We do not support hardware issues on non-supported laptops or CPUs.  If you are still using MSOffice 2003 on your computer and you wish to view MSOffice 2007 documents please link to: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/default.aspx - and install the download entitled "Office Compatibility Pack" once installed this will open, edit, and save documents, workbooks, and presentations created in the file formats new to Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007.

If you would like to read MSOff2007/2010 docs using MSOff2003 software:  You have several choices (1) Install the above-mentioned patch; (2) Bring your laptop to the help desk and request that we reimage your supported Dell laptop (no charge) to add MSOffice; or (3) Purchase MSOffice 2010 (win) or 2008(mac) for $15 ($ must be in Common Funds on your WSC OneCard ID) at the IT Help Desk/Laptop Repair Depot to self-install.

Support Statement to Faculty and Staff:

August, 2010

Windows 7 operating system has been thoroughly tested, is stable/supportable on current hardware and training documentation is available, we are currently rolling this out on new PCs/Laptops as well as existing PCs/Laptops meeting the specification requirements. All College owned laptops and key desktops are also set up with Encryption, as per policy.

We cannot upgrade FacStaff personally owned laptops/PCs .  If you wish to self-upgrade your personal laptop/PC, the Win7 Ultimate operating system CD/DVD is available at the IT Help Desk/Laptop Repair Depot for $20.00 ($ must be in Common Funds on your WSC OneCard ID) this product is available if you wish to self-install.  This can not be utilized to upgrade campus-owned computers.

MSOffice 2007 is standard on all Faculty/Staff computers across campus.  Beginning Summer2011, all computer labs will be upgraded to MSOffice 2010.  Microsoft 2010 is available upon request - the campus will migrate fully to this version at such time as we are satisfied that  the software has been thoroughly tested, is stable/supportable on current hardware and training documentation is available.  Good News!: The learning curve between MSOffice 2007 and MSOffice 2010 is not as dramatic as moving from 2003.
