Community Works!
Exceptional Opportunities for Professional Development • Limited Openings Exist
**Place as the Context, Service-Learning as the Strategy, Sustainability as the Goal**
We are pleased to announce a series of unique opportunities for professional development this summer. Each Institute represents an opportunity to make deep connections between your curriculum and your community. These events are offered in partnership by Community Works, Shelburne Farms, and the Sustainable Schools Project. Each event is distinct in content, while sharing purpose, conceptual unity, and a nationally recognized faculty team. All events are appropriate for K-16 teachers, administrators, and community-based educators. Graduate credit is also available for each event. More information, along with a downloadable brochure, is available on the Web at:

Developing a Service Learning Curriculum
Developing a Service-Learning Curriculum: Learning through Experience in the
Dominican Republic
There is no better way for educators to learn about service-learning than to
experience it themselves. We invite you to join us on our second annual
service-learning workshop in the Dominican Republic. Designed for educators,
this expedition takes a ³train the trainers² approach, immersing you in an
intensive service experience in order to help you learn how to coordinate
future service-learning programs for students at your own school. This
experience will give you the grounding you need in service-learning and
civic engagement to develop or refine a service-learning program that
will provide a high educational benefit to your students and a commensurate
benefit to the communities you visit.
During the nine-day workshop, we will live in a remote community in the
highlands of the Dominican Republic and work with the community through a
local non-governmental organization. The day-to-day schedule will model best
practices for a service-learning program. In addition to your work in the
community, an experienced facilitator will guide you through learning about
both theoretical and practical aspects of service-learning programs. You
will analyze a broad range of strategies for preparation, engagement, and
reflection with students. And you will discuss issues such as
service-learning theory, selection of a project and partner organization,
and risk minimization.
The curriculum is designed and co-taught by Carrie Williams Howe, the
Associate Director of Community-University Partnerships and Service-Learning
(CUPS) at the University of Vermont. The expedition is offered by The
LiveLearning Program, a non-profit organization that operates
service-learning expeditions and trainings in Latin America to promote
responsible social change. The workshop is open to and appropriate for all
educators, regardless of school affiliation.
Dates: June 21st 29th, 2008.
Cost: $1,700. Subsidies may be available. Graduate course credit available.
Cost includes all trip expenses except airfare, $10 arrival tax and textbook
($19.99).
